Japan Airlines Premium Economy

I must acknowledge Dave for recommending Japan Airlines' Premium Economy service. To fly round trip Premium Economy directly from Boston's Logan Airport to Narita Airport outside Tokyo added several hundred dollars in price versus their Economy seating. But I considered it well worth it on such a long flight.

Our service with Japan Airlines was great. We got married and my new wife changed her name after I had bought the tickets. Talking with Japan Airlines customer service and following their instructions to update her name on our reservations was easy and trouble-free. The flight attendants on both our flights spoke good English as well as Japanese. And, as I would expect, they were courteous and pleasant. Flights were on time.

The seats in Premium Economy were spacious and comfortable for me. Plenty of legroom, even for a tall person like myself. The meals were good. The first one they served from Boston to Japan was balanced, wholesome, enjoyable, and better than your typical meals on American domestic flights. The second one on that flight had more refined carbohydrates and wasn't quite as wholesome, but it was edible. Similar experience on our return flight.

In Premium Economy they gave us pillows, eye masks, ear plugs, among other things. The in-flight entertainment was great. Good video screens with plenty of movies and other stuff to watch. They even had a good video tutorial on passenger etiquette, which I wish more passengers would watch!

They do not include Wifi with their Premium Economy service, which was disappointing. I opted to pay the fee on board for Wifi. But bear in mind it's via satellite, which can drop out for portions of such a long flight.

With Japan Airlines Premium Economy seats, you also get access to their lounges at Boston Logan airport and Narita airport. The lounges were excellent. Comfortable and peaceful, with ample great buffet-style food to choose from. It was very relaxing and pleasant to enjoy the lounges before our flights. A much better experience than hanging around the plane gates before flights.

A little video tour of that lounge at Boston Logan airport:
