Portable Power Bank / Charger

Before I vacationed in Japan I researched portable back up batteries to restore charge to my smartphone in case its battery ran down while I was on the go. I bought one and brought it on vacation in Japan. It turned out to be a good decision and I got a great return on my investment.

These devices go by a variety of terms: portable batteries, power banks, or portable chargers. Essentially, they're just batteries that hold a lot of charge. You can connect them to your smartphone or other mobile device to recharge it if an electrical socket is unavailable or inconvenient.

The portable charger I settled on was the Anker PowerCore 5000 Portable Charger. It was relatively inexpensive, light, and compact but had good reviews of its performance. And it turned out I was delighted with its performance. Below is an ad to buy it on Amazon if you like. (Full disclosure: Amazon pays me a small commission if you buy, though you pay the same price you would otherwise.)

I did use my smartphone a lot while on the go in Japan. Oftentimes by the afternoon or evening my smartphone's battery would be running down. I simply plugged it in using the USB cable and the Anker PowerCore 5000 rapidly restored a full charge to my phone's battery. And the Anker PowerCore 5000 still had some charge left over. So you could potentially get more than one full phone charge out of the Anker PowerCore 5000.

The Anker PowerCore 5000 was simple and easy to use. It was small enough that I could stuff it in a pants or jacket pocket when it was charging my phone. When I wasn't using it I just kept it in its little drawstring sack and stored it in my backpack. It even had a few lights on it that enabled you to see at a glance its level of charge. For its low price and great performance, I was pleased I got one. I might even bring more than one on my next trip.
