Kawayu Midoriya

We indulged in the most expensive room (Japanese style with open air bath) at Kawayu Midoriya. And boy did we regret it.

Kawayu Midoriya's website was not available in an English version, so I had my Chrome web browser translate it—rather poorly and inadequately, though.

I made the reservation by emailing the hotel several months in advance. They replied in English. It was:
It’s 48,150yen per person per night. (with dinner and breakfast)
        48,150yen  × 2adults  ( 96,300yen in total)
Meal : Buffet (dinner and breakfast)

The hotel was convenient lodging for our hike along the Kumano Kodo trail.

The Japanese style room with open air bath was large, with multiple rooms. It was perhaps the most spacious hotel room we stayed in. But it was old, including the bathrooms. The open air bath on the balcony fed by natural hot springs was indeed nice. It had a wonderful view overlooking the river and forested mountain. But for the high price we paid, we were expecting nicer rooms.

The breakfast and dinner were disappointing. I think at dinner we were each served a cooked crawfish. It was not prepared or shelled. Just a cooked crawfish staring at me with its ugly bug eyes. To even be able to eat the rest of the meal I had to put a lid on that dish. That was the only time in Japan when I was served food that grossed me out. There were a variety of other buffet foods to choose from, but overall the quality was disappointing for the high price we paid.

We left Kawayu Midoriya rather mad that we overpaid for mediocre quality lodging and food. Your preferences may differ from ours. But I think I would have been satisfied with Kawayu Midoriya if we selected one of their far less expensive rooms.
