Out of the seven places of lodging at which I made reservations for our two week vacation, the Palace Side Hotel was one of only two that I regretted. In fact, I regretted it so much that despite having paid in full for the two nights upon check-in, I could not bear to stay the second night. (Perhaps that's why this was the only hotel that requested full payment upon check-in.)
Our "Twin Standard" room was uncomfortably small even by Japanese standards. With our suitcases in the room, it was difficult for us to walk from our beds to the bathroom or even exit the room. I hit my head a number of times in its doorways. There were a number of other irritants I encountered which I don't recall at this point, but the final straw was the toilet in our room. It clogged upon first (and normal) use. At that point, I was fed up and decided we would leave that day despite having already paid for another night.
Fortunately, I ended up finding an available room at the far superior Hotel Kado Gosho Minami Kyoto within walking distance. You may want to check out that hotel, as it was one of our favorites.
