Osaka Castle

Frommer's really mis-rated Osaka Castle. They gave both Osaka Castle (in Osaka) and Nijo Castle (in Kyoto) their same, highest rating of three out of three stars. I could not believe how inaccurate that was.

Nijo Castle and its grounds were big and beautiful and we regretted we didn't give them more time in our schedule. In contrast, Osaka Castle had an arduous uphill climb, a long and slow ticket line, was small and uncomfortably crowded inside, was not a castle inside (just rather lame pictures and displays throughout), and had nothing satisfying or pleasing about it. They recommend first ascending to the top floor then exploring each floor till you get to the ground floor. I went to the top floor and the floor beneath it and was quickly so displeased with the lame interior and the uncomfortable (and probably dangerous) overcrowding that I quickly gave up on Osaka Castle. I waited for my wife by the vending machine in the ground floor.

They don't allow photography inside Osaka Castle. My guess is they prohibit that so that it's not obvious to others how lame the interior is.

Osaka Castle was a big waste of time and money. I would have liked to have spent our time and money elsewhere. The best aspect of Osaka Castle for me was actually the Japanese elementary school kids apparently on a field trip who got a kick out of high-fiving me and talking with me in broken English while I spoke a little Japanese.😂
