Nijo Castle was one of our mutual favorite sites we visited during our Japan vacation. Unlike other temples and castles we visited, Nijo Castle was impressive inside and out. It was well-maintained and beautiful. It had informative displays inside if you wanted to learn of its history. There are also audio guide devices available for rent if you want that guidance while you walk.
The outside gardens were extensive and gorgeous. We could have happily spent a few hours strolling through this complex and we regretted we didn't give it enough time in our schedule.
Frommer's gave Nijo Castle its highest rating of three out of three stars. Shockingly, Frommer's also gave Osaka Castle three out of three stars. Osaka Castle, I can assure you, paled in comparison to Nijo Castle in every respect. Nijo Castle deserved those three stars, unlike Osaka Castle and other attractions we visited.
